Police are searching for a man they say attacked and sexually assaulted a woman Wednesday evening in Alleghany County.

"A female was abducted at gunpoint at the corner of Cypress and Alleghany Avenue in the city of Covington," said Lt. Col. Bowser.

The woman told police that when she pulled up to the intersection, the man jumped into her car, held her at gunpoint and demanded her to start driving.

"The vehicle traveled through the city of Covington, got on Interstate 64," said Bowser.

They drove along Alleghany Avenue, across the bridge to the other side of the James River, down Evans Lane, into the wide open field, and down to the water's edge.

"After she was assaulted, the suspect fled the area on foot," said Bowser.

And with him, he took the car keys.

"She walked to a residence in the area and called 911," said Bowser.

The victim described the suspect as a black male, 25 to 30 years old, and about six feet tall.  She says he was wearing a blue muscle shirt, black basketball shorts, and black gloves at the time of the attack.  She says he has a tribal tattoo on his right arm.

UPDATED: 1:50 p.m.

Investigators with the Alleghany County sheriff's office released new information Thursday afternoon about an alleged abduction and sexual assault.

Lt. Colonel Matthew Bowser said that the victim was sitting in her car at a stop sign in Covington Wednesday evening when a man got in.  He held her a gunpoint and told her to drive to a remote location off McKinney Hollow Road near the Alleghany/Botetourt County line.  The woman said he sexually assaulted her and took her keys.  She went to a nearby house for help.

Bowser said there's no indication the same suspect is involved with similar assaults in the past few months.  Last September, a woman reported a similar incident in Clifton Forge.  Bowser said there was also an incident reported in Alleghany County in June.

The sheriff's office released a composite sketch of the suspect in Wednesday's attack.  Authorities advise residents to keep their homes and cars locked.
