Area marching bands get in step at summer camp

Before marching bands can hit the football fields this fall, many are getting their steps down at band camp.

Several schools in our area are taking part in the Mid-Atlantic band camp at Sweet Brier College. Northside High School finished up its week at camp on Saturday.

It's not all music, though. The kids say the experience is a lot of work and a lot of fun.

The seniors are called on to be leaders. Afterall, it's their fourth time away at camp.

"I think it's very important because you get all these new marchers out here who really don't know what they're doing," said Northside High School senior Hannah Martin. "If you're a younger drum major you won't really have that experience of making mistakes and then learning from those mistakes."

"A lot of hard work, a lot of aching feet, a lot of aching shoulders but it's been worth it in the end," added Chris Slattery, a Northside High School senior. "Just the satisfaction of putting on a good show."
