Conway lives on Turtle Island Preserve, North Carolina, where he founded an education center.Over the past five years, Roanoke College has sent out a book for all incoming freshmen to read the summer before school starts.
This year's book, "The Last American Man" is an award-winning true story based on the exploits of Eustace Conway.
At the age of 17, Conway left home to fend for himself in the Appalachian Mountains. Now almost 50, he came to the area to speak at Roanoke College's orientation Sunday.
"It's a story about what the last American man is, and I'm just a guinea pig that sort of fits the bill, explaining some of the qualities of manhood," says Conway.
Conway lives on a nature reserve in North Carolina where he grows his own food and founded an education center.
"The Last American Man" will be used as a focal point in activities and discussion as new students arrive on campus.
