"People aren't scared of the disease anymore," that's why Robert Murrow with the Council of Community Services believes they are not protecting themselves.
At community based testing facilities like the Drop-In Center in Roanoke, they've seen more new cases in the last 60 days, then all of last year.
"It's not limited to anyone one group," said Murrow
As of June 30th there were more than 15-hundred people in Southwest Virginia living with HIV or AIDS, more than 500 of them in the Roanoke Valley.
Most of the cases in our region are in people in their 40's, followed by those in their 50's, and then their 30's.
While word of a possible vaccine against the disease is promising news.
Murrow who works with the Ryan White program believes their is still a grim reality.
"People still do die," he said.
The challenge is people don't even know they're spreading it because they don't know they're infected.
The Drop-In Center on Church Avenue in Roanoke offers free confidential testing.
