Story time took on a new meaning for kids in Lynchburg Thursday.

Mayor Joan Foster was one of several city leaders who read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" at Randolph College Preschool.

The event was part of "Read for the Record," a nationwide program to promote literacy.

Young readers in Lynchburg joined with others around the globe as they tried to break a world record for reading the same book on the same day.

Experts say the real goal is getting kids interested in books.

"Reading is so important and the younger you start, the more literate and prepared the child will be for when they enter kindergarten," said Joan Foster, Lynchburg's mayor.

Foster read to children from three other schools earlier in the day.

She also handed out free books as part of her ongoing effort to get kids reading.
