RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginians are heading to the polls to elect a new governor.

Also on Tuesday's ballot are races for lieutenant governor, attorney general and the House of Delegates. Voting stations opened at 6 a.m. and, unlike during last year's presidential election, lines haven't been long and have moved relatively quickly. The polls close at 7 p.m.

Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds are competing to succeed Gov. Tim Kaine, who is ineligible for re-election under the Virginia Constitution. The race is being watched nationally because it's one of only two gubernatorial elections this year.

Democrat Jody Wagner is challenging Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who is seeking a second term. Two Fairfax County legislators, Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Democrat Steve Shannon, are running for attorney general.

Sixty-nine of Virginia's 100 House seats are contested.

UPDATED 7:30 a.m.

News 7 has learned  there was a problem at the Botetourt Springs Precinct at Lifeway Church on Peters Creek Road in Roanoke Co.

Voting was delayed for 45 minutes because of an equipment error. Voters were asked to wait until the problem was fixed.

Election officials have told News 7 that problem has been resolved.

There are a few things to keep in mind as voters head out to the polls today.

Election officials say you must have your ID ready. It can be your driver's license, a social security card, college ID, an ID from your employer, military ID or voter registration card.

If you forgot your ID , you can sign an affidavit and still vote.

The health department has urged election officials to have hand sanitizer available at each precinct.

The polls are open until 7 p.m.

----------------------------------------

After an expensive and rancorous campaign for governor, Republican Bob McDonnell and Democrat Creigh Deeds make their closing arguments Monday in stops statewide.

Jetting from city to city, McDonnell planned seven stops in the final day of campaigning before the election and Deeds plans to make four.

Deeds appealed to Democrats in Charlottesville, Roanoke, Richmond and Alexandria to turn out in strength before a final appearance in his hometown, rural Millboro.

McDonnell is in Prince William, Roanoke, Charlottesville, Abingdon, Alexandria, Richmond and wraps up in Virginia Beach.

The latest News7 SurveyUSA poll shows Democratic candidate for governor Creigh Deeds is quickly running out of time to turn his campaign around.

Republican candidate for governor Bob McDonnell has an 18 point lead over Deeds.

That's about the same margin since SurveyUSA began polling the race in July.  The poll also shows sizeable leads for the Republican candidates for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General.
