A Lynchburg health provider is getting special recognition for its unique approach to cancer treatment.
Centra's Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center is first in the country to be certified through the STAR program.
STAR trains hospitals to offer ongoing care for cancer survivors.
Centra was recognized for its Oncology Rehab service, which helps survivors transition back to normal life.
Oncology Rehab helps patients work through the pain, fatigue, and memory loss that sometimes come as a side-effect of treatment.
"They'll function at higher levels. They'll function with less pain. They'll be able to work better, raise their families, be with their grandchildren, and have a better quality of life," says STAR program creator Julie Silver.
Silver developed the STAR program through her work at Oncology Rehab Partners, a company she founded to deliver the program, and her experience as a cancer survivor.
