Taxi cab crashes into Roanoke fire station

A taxi driver and a suspected robber are recovering after their van crashed into a firehouse.

The wreck happened just after 8 p.m. Monday.  Police say the passenger in a Yellow Cab tried to rob the driver. As they struggled, the van crashed into Fire Station Number One on Franklin Road.

The driver has several broken bones. The passenger was also hurt. Police have not released their names.  We're told charges are pending.

Roanoke Police Department Investigates Attempted Robbery

Roanoke, VA- A suspect is in custody following an attempted robbery that occurred on November 2, 2009. Officers responded at 8:09 p.m. to Fire Station 1 in the 700 block of Franklin Road, regarding a mini-van belonging to Yellow Cab that crashed into the building. The driver, a 41 year old male of Roanoke, stated that he picked up a customer in front of Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital at approximately 8 p.m. The customer then instructed the driver to drive into an alley in between Elm Avenue and Franklin Road. Once in the alley, the suspect physically assaulted the driver and demanded money. The driver stated that he began driving in an attempt escape from the suspect. The vehicle crashed into Fire Station 1, injuring the driver and the suspect. Both were transported to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Charges are pending.
