NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Yankees have won the World Series, beating the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 in Game 6 behind Hideki Matsui's record-tying six RBIs.
Andy Pettitte won the clincher Wednesday night, pitching the Yankees to their elusive 27th championship and first since 2000.
Matsui homered, doubled and singled, and tied Bobby Richardson's 49-year-old record for RBIs in a Series game. His two-run homer off Pedro Martinez in the second inning started the Yankees on their way.
Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez helped the Yankees wrap up a most successful season in their first year at the new $1.5 billion Yankee Stadium.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Two aging stars will square off on the mound tonight in New York, where the Yankees can wrap up their 27th championship with a Game 6 victory over the Phillies.
Manager Joe Girardi will hand the ball to Andy Pettitte. The 37-year-old left-hander will be pitching on three days rest for the first time since late in the 2006 season when he was with Houston.
His last postseason start on short rest was in 2003. Pettitte was the Game 3 winner last Thursday, giving up four runs in six innings on five days' rest.
Philadelphia skipper Charlie Manuel also is going with an "old war horse." He'll send out 38-year-old right-hander Pedro Martinez in an attempt to extend the baseball season one more day. The three-time Cy Young Award winner was the Game 2 loser and is 0-and-2 with a 5.75 ERA in four postseason appearances in the Bronx.
The Yankees have to find a way to silence Chase Utley's bat. The lefty-swinging second baseman has matched a World Series record with five home runs, while hitting .333 and collecting eight RBIs.
The Phillies have to slow down Alex Rodriguez. The Bombers third baseman has driven in 18 runs during the 2009 playoffs, including six against the Phils. A-Rod is two short of the postseason RBIs record.
The temperature is expected to be in the 40s at gametime. If Game 7 is needed, they play it tomorrow night in the Big Apple.
