Senator George Allen has conceded the Virginia U.S. Senate election to Democrat Jim Webb.   Allen made the announcement at a news conference at 3:15 p.m. in Northern Virginia.

The one-term senator spoke with his wife Susan by his side.  He was introduced by Virginia's senior U.S. Senator, John Warner.

"The people of Virginia have spoken," Senator Allen said.  He said he respects that decision and has called Jim Webb to offer congratulations.

Allen said he sees no purpose in calling for a recount, even though he is entitled to one under state law.  Allen opted against demanding a recount after initial canvassing of Tuesday's results failed to significantly alter Webb's lead of about 7,200 votes out of nearly 2.4 million ballots cast.

Jim Webb's victory  seals a Democratic takeover of the U.S. Senate.  Webb declared victory early yesterday morning after election returns showed him with a narrow lead.  He is scheduled to speak to reporters at 4:15 in Arlington.

Allen concluded his remarks by urging his supporters, "Stay strong and stand strong for freedom."
