News-7 Poll: Slavery apology issue shows racial division

Two-thirds of Virginians in the WDBJ7 viewing area say Virginia should not issue a formal apology for slavery.

Some Virginia lawmakers have proposed a resolution apologizing for more than two centuries of slavery, which ended with the Civil War.

SurveyUSA polled 500 adults in the News-7 viewing area this week and found that 67% of them are against the idea of an apology.  However a majority of blacks responding to the survey (58%) believe an apology is a good idea.

Do you think the state of Virginia should? Or should not? issue a formal apology for slavery?

24% Should
67% Should Not
9% Not Sure
