Kiwanis volunteers clean up part of Roanoke River

Saturday's warm weather drove many people down to the Roanoke River.  But they didn't venture there to cool off.

Members of the Roanoke Valley Kiwanis Club spent the morning picking up trash and debris around the waterway.  Volunteers combed the riverbank between Wasena Park and Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

City workers also were on hand to haul off the bags of waste and other items collected.

"We feel that the river is one of the valley's greatest resources and this is our part at making the river its very best by cleaning up the trash and so forth," said organizer Mike Loveman.

The Kiwanis have made this a yearly project.  Normally they run into large trash items like tires and even old refrigerators abandoned along the river.  But this year, they say there wasn't too much of that.
