Bogus toothpaste discovered in 6 states, including Virginia

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Counterfeit Colgate toothpaste has now turned up in Canada and six states -- including Virginia. A health official says testing has found dangerous bacteria but not the poisonous chemical previously detected in four U-S states. Store owners and police say they have discovered that the bogus Colgate was also sold in Michigan and Virginia. The F-D-A has previously warned that fake Colgate distributed in Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania may contain a poisonous chemical called D-E-G that typically is used in antifreeze. It's not yet clear if the counterfeit products in Michigan and Virginia have been tested for D-E-G. In Canada, a spokesman says testing did NOT find the chemical but did show high levels of harmful bacteria. In all cases, the toothpaste was labeled as made in South Africa, which the label misspells. Its true origin is unknown.
