Route 221 in Roanoke County reopens after fatal truck accident

An accident on Bent Mountain Road killed a tractor trailer driver and closed a section of Route 221 most of Sunday.

The accident happened shortly after 8:00 A.M.  A portion of Route 221 between Moonlight and Strawberry Lanes is still closed.  Emergency and transportation officials expect that the area will remain closed through part of Sunday night.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Steven Langley of North Carolina.  Police say he was transporting fireworks to Radford.  Dealing with explosive materials made the situation very delicate for emergency workers.

"We had great potential.  If the truck itself had caught fire when it turned over something like that, we could have the potential of an explosion," said Chief Roger Vest of the Roanoke County Fire and Rescue.

Crews reopened the section of Route 221 just after 9:00 P.M.
