The July 4th parade in Shawsville featured an unusual float, one with a message directed toward Norfolk Southern and its plans to build an intermodal freight yard in the Shawsville-Elliston area of Montgomery County.

Citizens for Preservation of Our Countryside said they were using Independence Day to "declare independence from corporate rule".

"So the people in this community want to make a stand", Dan Burroughs told us, "and we want to say what we believe is right for our community, and that's why our float is in this parade".

Norfolk Southern announced one year ago that its was looking at the Shawsville-Elliston area to build a Roanoke Valley intermodal yard. It would transfer trailers between trucks and trains.

The railroad and the state are looking at several other sites in the Roanoke Valley. Salem is promoting a location within its city limits. No word when a decision might be made.
