Jimmy Carter, Deborah Beamer and Rosalynn Carter
Former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter had lunch Thursday at the McDonald's in Hillsville near Interstate 77 in Carroll County.
According to the Hillsville Fire Department, Deborah Beamer was sitting in the restaurant with her son and daughter-in-law when she noticed Carter coming out of the restroom. She says she immediately asked for his autograph, and he signed his name on a McDonald's napkin. When she asked a member of the Secret Service if she could take a picture with him, he said, "You may ask the president."
The former first lady asked if she could be in the picture as well. Beamer's son Jacob took the picture with his cell phone. After discussing Carroll County High School's formation of a chapter of Habitat for Humanity, Beamer says Carter told her he was heading north and left the restaurant.
Martina Wright, a McDonald's employee, says the former president had a salad, a chocolate sundae and coffee.
Beamer called the meeting "an honor... One of the most exciting days of my life."
