From Richmond streets to a VT student: One man's journey

Going to college can be a challenge.  But a Richmond man is proving anyone can achieve their goals.

If you met Adrian Jones on the streets, you would have no idea he used to be homeless.  "My mother had a severe drug problem.  I think I was like five or six years old the first time that we were homeless.  And I had been abandoned at one time for two weeks," says Jones.

As a child, he was sexually abused by a male teacher.  Jones started high school, but dropped out.  He moved from one menial job to another.  Three years ago he landed at Safe Haven.  It is a shelter that helps get folks without a home back on their feet.

Jones earned his GED and got into J Sergeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond.  Thanks to his excellent grades and a transfer agreement between community college's, Jones is now packing his bags for Virginia Tech.  He can't wait to become a Hokie.

"I'm definitely looking forward to being on campus and walking across the Drill Field at 15 below in the dead of winter," says Jones.  He is majoring in finance and wants to own a business in the future.  Jones wants to help low income people achieve home ownership.
