One local man and his family were in Peru when the earthquake hit. Former Roanoker John Poe and his family are fine.

Five years ago he and his family moved to Lima, Peru to work as missionaries. Living in that area, he has grown used to dealing with tremors but he has never endured anything like the one that hit yesterday.

Poe and his family were home Wednesday night when the earthquake hit. He knew this one was different. They immediately fled their apartment.

In a telephone interview from Peru, Poe said, "When we got into the street everybody from the whole neighborhood was running from their building. People were screaming and crying, "God save us. God help us."

Poe says he was afraid nearby buildings were going to collapse on them. He says the quake lasted about 2 minutes and it felt like the ground was rolling.

Poe and his family returned home to find only minor damage. The quake left them badly shaken but they have no plans of relocating from the area.
