News-7 Poll: Mark Warner has an early advantage against all likely challengers

A News-7 statewide poll shows Mark Warner has an early advantage against either of the Republicans considered most likely to face him next year.

SurveyUSA asked 783 Virginia voters over the weekend who would they favor if the election was today.  This comes after Warner announced last week in an on-line video that he would run for the U.S. Senate seat John Warner is leaving.  In a match up with another former governor, 60% said they favored Warner, almost double the 32% for Jim Gilmore.

The difference is even wider for Congressman Tom Davis, 62% for Warner, 27% for Davis.  The Republican who drew the most support in this poll is former Senator George Allen, who told us last week he is not running and has no interest in doing so.
