Classes resume at William Byrd High School amidst health concerns

William Byrd High School was closed yesterday for elections, but classes have resumed today.

More testing is planned. This time the focus will be on surfaces throughout the building.

School officials have already performed air and water tests and nothing has turned up.

As the school undergoes testing of several surfaces throughout the building, the art room is a concern.

But school officials continue to say the school is safe based on the tests so far and on the advice of health and environmental experts. They don't believe this is not something contagious or public health hazard.

For the first time school officials are revealing at least the symptoms that one student experienced.

They describe it as twitching or a shaking movement in their limbs.

Since the meeting, school officials say no one else has come forward with symptoms.

School board members are meeting Thursday night. One thing they will be discussing is what will happen to students who choose not to go to school because of this situation.

There were 266 absences reported today at the school.

Outside of the school this morning, no protests were held.

One student and others from the community feel the whole situation is being overstated.

But the parents who have been the most outspoken about the illness say their concern is quite real.

We'll hear from some of them tonight on News 7 at 5.
