Band director free after charges of being involved with student

A Roanoke County high school band director is free tonight after he was accused of being involved with a female student.

Christopher Matthew Yates, who is 30, was charged and arrested Monday morning in Botetourt County with taking indecent liberties.

Even though there's been talk within the Glenvar community that something's been going on, neighbors in Yates' Troutville community were shocked.  They say he was a nice guy who would never do something like this.

Christopher Yates, or Matt Yates as he's known, is in his fifth-year at Glenvar High School where he's a music teacher and band director.  According to administration, Yates has been put on "indefinite leave."  He was held on $12,000 bond at the Botetourt County jail, but as of Monday night, deputies say they don't have a Yates in their custody.

Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle confirmed for News-7 the alleged victim in this case actually lived with Yates and his wife.  Yates is due back in court on January 22.
