Several dozen rabbits have been rescued from filthy conditions on a Botetourt County farm.
After several warnings from the county, the 42 bunnies were brought to the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection.
The animals were suffering from several diseases, some of which can be transmitted to humans.
While the investigation is continuing, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jill Deegan says it's been discovered the farmer was going to sell the sick animals as Easter pets.
"Ultimately these animals were headed, which it was part of our concern knowing the history of the animals. I think it's important when the public is out looking for a pet; you know where your pet is coming from," says Deegan.
The case is still under investigation. The farmer's name has not been released.
In the meantime, the animals will be taken to a sanctuary in Botetourt County to heal before they're made available for adoption.
