Fatal fire in Botetourt County claims the life of a Roanoke teacher

A Roanoke City teacher died over the weekend in a house fire.

Firefighters were called to a home on Emerald Lake Drive near the Rainbow Forest section of the county around 6:00 a.m. Sunday.

Once crews knocked down the flames, they pulled a woman's body out of the home.  They believe it was 38-year-old Melissa Rickman.  She was the only one in the home at the time of the fire.  Her husband, Anthony Lloyd Rickman, and their two children were out of town.

Rickman was a math teacher at James Madison Middle School. She'd taught there for three years.

An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death.  Fire investigators are looking into the cause.
