LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- Two state Department of Environmental Quality regional offices have been combined as a result of state budget cuts but an agency spokesman says the cost savings won't be significant.
Bill Hayden says consolidating the Lynchburg and Roanoke offices was mostly administrative and both will remain open.
He says the consolidation mainly was a move to deal with existing vacant positions.
Hayden says the new Blue Ridge Regional Office will be the agency's largest geographical district. It will serve 24 counties and nine cities.
Hayden didn't know how many positions were eliminated. But he says 58 positions statewide were eliminated in October. Thirty-five were vacant and about 20 employees found new jobs within the agency.
