Suspicious device evacuates South Boston neighborhood

A South Boston neighborhood was closed for more than five hours Sunday while police investigated a strange object.

Investigators say someone found what looked like a pipe bomb in front of 707 Marshall Avenue.

South Boston police, Virginia State Police, and the Halifax County Sheriff's Office responded and evacuated homes on Marshall Avenue, Seymour Drive, and Vaughn Street.  The device was later determined to be safe.

Evidence from the scene will be analyzed at the Virginia Department of Forensic Science.

Police have not filed any charges in this case.
