Counterfeit check and charity scams becoming more prevalent

Scams involving counterfeit checks are becoming more common in Southwest Virginia.

On Monday, News 7's Bob Grebe talked with Julie Wheeler of the Better Business Bureau about the issue.

A common tactic that scammers use is sending checks and getting people to wire money back to them. Many of these scams have been connected to "Secret Shopper" schemes.

Scammers are also using disasters such as the recent events in Myanmar to trick people into thinking they are giving charitable donations.

Wheeler says its best to do your homework before making any charitable donations.
