Mary Azrael bids farewell to her champion beech

American beech in northwest Baltimore backyard was city's champion and the fourth largest in Maryland. Its leaning trunk was hollowed out by rot, though, so owner Mary Azrael, seen here waiting for tree crew, reluctantly decided to cut it down for safety reasons.
