( George W. Holsey/The Baltimore Sun ) Then again, for someone who really took it to the British, check out this statue of Scottish hero William Wallace in Druid Hill Park. Wallace (1272-1305), the subject of Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning "Braveheart," was a hero of the Wars of Scottish Independence and, for about 10 years, a major thorn in England's side. The statue, commissioned by Scottish expatriate and successful Baltimore businessman William Wallace Spence, has been standing guard over Druid Hill Lake since 1893. |
