There are some things in life that are just so unexpected and this is one of them.
"Well we've approached several people so far and a lot of them can't believe it's no strings attached money," says Damon Gettier, a customer with FreedomFirst Credit Union.
For the next four weeks, FreedomFirst Credit Union will be catching Roanokers off guard, giving out blue envelopes. Stuffed inside are $5, $10, $20 even $50.
"We were trying to come up with a creative way to show how we do good in the community. We thought if we would give small amounts to people all over the community we could really show what an impact just a little bit could make," says Cari Humphries, Assistant Vice President of Market with Freedom First Credit Union.
The credit union is asking recipients to spend it how'd they'd like, deposit it or pay it forward.
"It's cool. It's cool. You're kind of like what's going on," says Patti Thompson, a recipient.
Most people were so shocked by it all, they were almost speechless. Others knew exactly how they're going to put their new found fortune to use. One woman told WDBJ7 she planned to donate it to Angels of Assisi.
"Actually seeing as I don't have money it'll help me go grab something to eat at the moment," says Bethany Bailey, a recipient.
Such a small gesture, but one appreciated by so many.
FreedomFirst is hoping people will go to its Facebook page and tell how they used the money. The credit union plans to give out a total of $20,000.
