The man known for what many called "the best half-pound cheeseburger" has died.

A note on the door of "Mike's Grill" in Blacksburg reads "the restaurant is closed in honor of Michael Varelos.”

Varelos opened his restaurant in 1976, right across from what is now the main entrance to Virginia Tech.

Mike's family said he had wanted to go to college when he was younger, but didn't have the money.

So he opened up a restaurant instead.

Only the family knows the secret to Mike's "magic spice burgers."

The family says he passed away at his home on Monday in Blacksburg.

Varelos was 77.

According to a sign on the door, Mike's Grill will re-open on November 24.
