Indian River Striders are inviting all walkers and runners to join them for fitness, exercise, motivation. Walkers meet at 9 a.m. (winter) or 8 a.m. (summer) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Indian River Chamber of Commerce, walking 4 miles, usually on the North Central State Bicycle Trail. Running (or walking) is at 6 p.m. on Mondays (spring, summer, fall) at the Indian River Chamber of Commerce and at 1 p.m. on Sundays at Indian River McDonalds (winter). New Hope Community Church meets 10 a.m. Sundays in the Petoskey Knights of Columbus hall. Miscellaneous

Soups, salads and desserts will be on the tables at this year's Emmet County Democratic Committee cook-off contest 5-8 p.m. Sunday, March 11. The annual fundraiser will be in the conference room at the Holiday Inn Express, 1751 U.S. 131 South, Petoskey. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 5-12, and free for younger children. Bread and beverages will be included with the all-you-can-eat meal. Attendees will be invited to vote for their favorites among the soups, salads and desserts. Those who prepare the winning entries will receive gift certificates donated by area businesses. With advance reservations, cook-off participants and others attending the event may use the hotel's pool and hot tub the afternoon of March 11, before the contest, for a small additional charge.To sign up to participate in the cook-off, or to register to use the pool, call Mary Jane Clayton, event chair, at (231) 526-6618.
