UPDATE: Second person dies following Wednesday crash in Henry County

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A second person has died following an accident Wednesday in Henry County.

Christopher James of Roanoke died Thursday at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was 25.

A passenger in the BMW he was driving, Barbara Scales, died Wednesday. She was 23 and lived in Martinsville.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Commonwealth Boulevard at the intersection with Virginia Ave.

Virginia State Police Trooper J. M. Mabe is investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash that occurred on June 22, 2016. The crash occurred at 4:32 pm on Commonwealth Blvd at its intersection with Virginia Ave in Henry County.

A 2001 BMW traveling at an excessive speed crossed the center line and struck two vehicles, a 2006 Ford Econoline Van and a 2013 Nissan Altima, both were making a left turn onto Commonwealth Blvd.

The BMW was driven by Christopher Jamal James, 25, of Roanoke, VA. James was wearing his seatbelt and was transported by EMS for injuries received in the crash. (June 23, 2016 Roanoke Memorial Hospital notified the Virginia State Police that Christopher Jamal James passed away do to his injuries). A passenger in the BMW, Barbara Tresene Scales, 23, of Martinsville, VA was wearing her seatbelt and died at the scene.

The 2006 Econoline was driven by Benjamin M. Wingfield, 59, of Martinsville, VA. Mr. Wingfield was wearing his seatbelt and was transported by EMS for injuries received in the crash.

The 2013 Altima was driven by Sequoa Danielle Penn, 29, of Martinsville, VA. Ms. Penn was wearing her seatbelt and was also transported by EMS for injuries received in the crash.

The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist with the investigation.

Charges are pending.

The crash remains under investigation.

A 23-year-old Martinsville woman died in a head-on crash on Wednesday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Commonwealth Boulevard at the intersection with Virginia Ave.

State police say Christopher Jamal James, 25, of Roanoke, was driving excessively fast when he hit a van and a car that were both making a left turn onto Commonwealth Boulevard.

James was taken to the hospital. His passenger, Barbara Tresene Scales, 23, of Martinsville, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

Benjamin M. Wingfield, 59, of Martinsville, who was driving the van, was hurt in the crash.

Sequoa Danielle Penn, 29, of Martinsville, was driving the car that James hit. She was also hurt in the wreck.

Charges are pending.
