UPDATE: Early morning fire destroys old Roanoke City Schools maintenance building

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) **UPDATE**
There's a massive fire in downtown Roanoke on the 200-block of Reserve Ave., at the corner of Franklin Rd.

Fire crews got the call for the fire at the old Roanoke City Schools maintenance building around 2 a.m. Sunday. The building was acquired by Carilion Clinic about a year and a half ago.

Carilion hadn’t made a decision on how the building would be used, but we’re told employees were on site last week, and the building was secure at that time.

Carilion spokesperson, Chris Turnbull, said the hospital did not have anything in the building, and no people were inside. Turnbull said power to the building was off.

Multiple units were still on the scene at 10 a.m.

Chief David Hoback with Roanoke Fire and EMS said when they arrived flames were shooting out of the building, and the fire was too big to attack from the inside.

“Once they got in they realized it was too extensive heavy fire involved throughout the building. They had a roof collapse. So we pulled out, been defensive ever since. Fire has spread throughout the building, have multiple collapses throughout the building. It's unsafe for us to enter so now we're trying to cool down the hot spots,” Chief Hoback said.

We're told the building is a total loss so it seems likely it will be demolished to make way for whatever comes next.

“In order to get the fire out, most likely we're going to have to get excavators in, pull the walls back and then sift through and see if we can determine what the cause is, but there a significant amount of damage, so it's going to be difficult,” Chief Hoback said.

They say they will be here for several hours, and hope to have it completely out by this afternoon.

Reserve Avenue and Wiley Drive are closed in both directions.
Franklin Road is closed to all traffic between the Route 220 on ramp and Brandon Avenue SW.

Investigators haven't determined the cause, but we're told that one person did show up at the hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. No word if that person is connected to the fire.

No firefighters have been injured.
