ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) A popular boat launch on Smith Mountain Lake will be closed for a couple of months starting this week on December 20.
Appalachian Power is closing the Hardy Ford Public Access area starting Wednesday for maintenance work.
The company will be dredging the lake to improve the experience for boaters.
According to Appalachian Power Spokesman John Shepelwich, an estimated 1,000 cubic yards of sediment will be removed to improve boating access in the area under all lake level conditions.
New permanent bathrooms will also be built at the boat launch.
"We do suggest people who do use that area to maybe try the Hales Ford public access area or the Oak Grove area which are both relatively close by on VA-122," said Shepelwich.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-February 2018.
