76-year-old man dies in Pittsylvania County crash

PITTSYLVANIA CO., Va. (WDBJ7) According to Virginia State Police, Harold Carson Jefferson, 76, of Danville has died after a vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 29 and Route 9313 (Chatham Middle Circle) in Pittsylvania County Monday.

Police said the accident happened at 7:40 p.m. Monday. Jefferson was making a left turn in his 1999 Buick from Chatham Middle Circle onto Route 29 when he struck a 2001 Ford Explorer traveling north on Route 29, police said. The Ford Explorer was driven by Bradford Christian McCutchen, 47, of Chatham. According to police, Jefferson failed to yield the right of way while turning left, which caused the accident.

Jefferson was wearing his seat belt and died at the scene. McCutchen was also wearing his seat belt and was taken to a nearby hospital.

Virginia State Police are still investigating.
