A veteran that wears many hats strives to be an example for her family

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) LaShawn Bell and her eldest daughter Aziah make lunch together for the family. The kitchen is the heart of the home like most and Bell's youngest Terell and Tytianna find their way in to help out.

"I learned how to structure my day so that I can be successful," said Bell. Bell says she learned this structure in the military. She's an Army veteran, a mother of three, a video engineer, and an owner of an online boutique.

"I decided that I wanted to protect the way of life my upcoming children and people that I love. I decided the best way to do that was to serve in the military," said Bell. She was an Army solider for seven years.

Bell served during Operation Freedom in Afghanistan, she got deployed to Kuwait, and also lived in Germany. Her daughter says she'll never forget moving around and her mother's deployment. "It was different and unique, but I appreciate it," said Aziah, Bell's daughter

As a mother, Bell tries to lead by example, teaching her children resilience and service. "Don't let anyone stop you, don't let statistics create who you are as a person," said Bell.

Her children realize the sacrifices she's made for them. "I feel proud of her. I think it's pretty cool she went off to serve for other people," said Whitaker.
