Amherst County Sheriff's Office Church Safety Training. Feb. 13, 2018.

The sheriff’s office says than 30 churches from several counties attended the training session.

Church leaders learned about ways to deal with threatening situations including fires and active shooter scenarios.

The sheriff's office says they're also offering on-site training to help churches prepare for such events.
“It's been a big thing because churches are a soft target and what we're trying to do is to make it so there is no target here,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Noel DePalma. “That we harden them up a little bit. Not that we make them aggressive. Good crime prevention, in this case, looks like good churching.

The sheriff's office says they will offer more sessions in the future.
