Police got the call to the Afton Gardens Apartments shortly before 11 o'clock this morning. They spent much of the day coming and going gathering information to figure out exactly what happened.

It was not the wake-up call Marissa Wallace anticipated.

Marissa Wallace said, “And my cat was in the window and I guess he heard he got scared and he jumped down on me and that's what made me get up.”

As soon as she got up, she saw the news. One person was shot at the apartment complex down the street.

“I don't know I just got this weird feeling so I just hopped put on my clothes and ran out the door to come over here,” said Wallace.

She has family who lives here, so she was checking to see if they were involved. Her family is okay.

Police say they got the call at 10:52 for a shooting. They were on scene within two minutes and found a 21 year old man with a gunshot wound to the face. The 21-year-old was conscious and talking to officers -- but he didn't give much information about the person who shot him. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Wallace says this type of violence is all too familiar.

“It's getting crazy out here in Roanoke period,” she said. “There's too many shootings.”

Witnesses told police the suspect left the scene driving South on Hunt Avenue toward Liberty Road. The investigation is ongoing.
