Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce hosts career expo

BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) -- Around 700 Bedford County students learned about different career options on Wednesday.

Bedford Chamber of Commerce hosts career & tech expo (WDBJ7).

The Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce hosted its first annual "Career and Tech Expo" at the Bedford Science and Technology Center.

Organizers say their goal is to help grow and train a skilled work force in the region.

They say the event helps to expose students to a variety of career opportunities. "Kids mostly think 'well I'll be a nurse or a doctor … or a physical therapist, they don't think about the other ancillary departments and support staff that are important in the hospital too," explained Mary Lavender, a Centra employee. "And so, it's a great way for me to highlight that."

The Chamber of Commerce says they focus on 7th grade students, because that's when they begin thinking about their career path.

They say they hope to keep hosting career expos in the future.
