BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The Bedford County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning about a video circulating on social media that, according to deputies, depicts the sexual abuse of a child.

According to a release from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office, the video is being shared via Facebook and has been reported to law enforcement by residents in the Central Virginia area.

Investigators say the video, in most cases, is being shared in an attempt to identify the victim and the offender.

Deputies are asking the public to refrain from sharing the video, or similar pictures and videos if they see it, as doing so is a felony offense under Virginia law. Authorities say sharing the video could also further exploit the child victim.

Facebook is tracking the spread of the video and may terminate the account of anyone that shares the images, according to a statement from the Bedford County Sheriff's Office. Sharing child pornography is a violation of Facebook's Terms of Service.
