BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) -- On Thursday, the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and Bedford Town Police Department received numerous calls from people reporting scam phone calls.

The scammers are calling people and identifying themselves as Bedford County Sheriff deputies.

Some scammers advise they have an arrest warrant for the person they're calling and to avoid being arrested they must purchase a green dot card (a prepaid card).

After purchasing the card, they are given a telephone number to call and give the scammer the number off the card.

Other scammers advise the person that they missed jury duty and to avoid being arrested to follow the same procedure.

The public is advised that law enforcement officers never call citizens and advise them to avoid being arrested they must send money.
