THAXTON, Va. (WDBJ7) Bedford County leaders are considering whether to sell a vacant former school building in Thaxton to a private business.

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors may vote as early as Monday night on whether to sell surplus property at 1081 Monrail Circle in Thaxton; a property that served as Thaxton Elementary School until its closure in 2015.

Monumental Ironworks LLC, a company that performs structural steel fabrication, is interested in buying the Thaxton property. If the sale goes through as currently proposed, the county would retain approximately three acres of the total nine-acre property.

County supervisors must hold a public hearing to gather feedback on the proposed sale before taking a vote on the matter. A public hearing is scheduled for Monday night at 7 at the Bedford County Administration Building on East Main Street.
