BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) Upwards of 40,000 people die from suicide in the US each year. Tuesday night, people gathered at Bedford Middle School to talk about prevention, especially among young people.
A speaker from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention told parents about risk factors for suicide, involving health and environment.
Parents also got to ask questions about prevention. One of the most important techniques they learned is talking about it directly.
"Ask directly if they are thinking about it. Are you thinking about suicide? And then talk," said Hart. "Let them talk, let them talk to you. Let them tell you what's going on, why they're feeling that way."
Those in attendance took notes on different warning signs ranging from mood to changes in behavior. The Bedford Middle PTA brought the speaker in and they are hoping to run more suicide prevention events in the future.
