BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) Energy from the sun may soon be part of Bedford's power supply.

The town's government plans to contract with a private company to operate a solar farm.

Solar panels will be built on a 20-acre property on Draper Road, near an old landfill.

Town leaders expect the project to generate enough energy to power about 600 homes for an entire year.

Electricity from the solar panels will be purchased by the town and fed into its existing power grid, which already includes energy generated by the town's hydroelectric power plant.

"With this we will be growing our renewable portfolio," said Bedford town manager Charles Kolakowski. "We view this as a real positive for current businesses and attracting new businesses."

Town council will have to approve the partnership with the solar company at its next meeting on Tuesday.
