RICHMOND, Va. (WDBJ7) Legislation that could help to reopen Patrick County Hospital has cleared a Senate committee in Richmond.
The bill would extend the hospital's state accreditation for another year.
And supporters say that's necessary to find a buyer.
The bill could clear the Senate next week.
"This gives us the best hope to reopen that hospital," said Senator Bill Stanley (R-Franklin County). " Rural health care is very important. I think the House of Delegates understands that, and they won't do anything that would damage this bill and the ability to reopen this hospital."
Stanley says he hopes lawmakers will move quickly, so the legislation could reach the governor's desk within a week or two.
