Blacksburg moving company creates jobs for college students

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) A moving company being called "Uber for moving" is growing quickly in Blacksburg as students move in and out of school.

Bellhops moving company launched around the country in 2013 and immediately became popular with college students looking for part-time work.

Salvador Pendleton, a mover at Bellhops, said, "It's a great way to make money if you're a college kid, kind of do it at your own pace, you're really on your own schedule and that's what attracted me to it. I'm here taking classes so I figured why not?"

Fellow mover Logan Waldron added, "Even though I live in Roanoke, currently, and I'm working on my two year degree it gives me an opportunity to familiarize with the area and get to meet the people around the area."

The company only hires college students to do the work, which in Blacksburg means Virginia Tech and Radford University students. Customers use a mobile app or website to order the service.

"We were able to get in contact with them only two days ago and they fit us in," said Michael Brenna, who used Bellhops Monday to move out of his apartment. "They took a job that would have taken us at least six hours, seven hours, and they did it in less than two."

Thanks to word of mouth, more and more college students are already getting involved in this growing business.

Waldron explained, "My friend Zack, he learned about it through a friend and it kind of got through the grapevine and he told me about it and I was like, 'Oh, I'm kind of interested in it.' So I kind of got into it by that."

And with no set hours to follow, students are keeping the job once they have it because they can manage their own time to work.

"I'm probably going to do it through the Fall and the Spring here just because it's easier to work around your schedule with classes," Pendleton said.

And the more the merrier.

Last year in Blacksburg, Bellhops business nearly doubled and they're projecting a similar growth this year, Which is proven by their satisfied customers.

Brenna said, "I've already talked to them, they're probably going to help me move into my new apartment in a couple weeks."
