Buchanan mayor resigns at council meeting

BUCHANAN, Va. (WDBJ7) - Buchanan's town hall has a few empty seats after two city leaders have resigned.

Town staff confirm to WDBJ7 that Mayor Larry Hall resigned at Wednesday night's council meeting - citing health and family reasons.

Earlier this week, the town's manager also submitted her resignation, effective early January. Mary Zirkle announced she will be taking on the job of Economic Development Coordinator for the Town of Bedford. Zirkle's position became the subject of some controversy in recent months as Buchanan town leaders questioned her residency because she did not live full-time in Buchanan. At the time Buchanan town bylaws required the town manager to reside within the town limits. Zirkle owned property in Buchanan, but said her primary residence was in Bedford County.

Buchanan is also searching for a town attorney.

There's no word yet on when those positions might be filled.
