Camp Healing Hearts helps children cope with the grief of losing a loved one

FRIES, Va. (WDBJ7) "Love Never Ends" is the theme for this year's Camp Healing Hearts.

Camp Healing Hearts in Fries offers activities and fun for children who are coping with grief.

This is the 19th year for the camp in Fries, Virginia.

It's happening next Saturday, July 23 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Camp Dickenson, and is designed especially for school- aged children and teens who are coping with grief.

Twin County Hospice nurse Sara Hart says the camp came about because there weren't a lot of support groups for kids experiencing loss.

"The camp gives them an opportunity to express their grief in many different stages, anger, denial, and this gives them the opportunity to interact with others and express in a safe environment where they're not being judged or looked at by their classmates," says Hart.

Hart says this year, the camp will also have pet therapy and art therapy.
