ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Carilion is celebrating a huge milestone in their cardiac department.
The Structural Heart Program team treated their 500th transcatheter aortic valve replacement, or TAVR, patient.
The TAVR procedure is a minimally invasive surgery that repairs the aortic valve using a sheath and stent. They're inserted at the groin rather than an open heart surgery.
Medical experts say this type of technology can be beneficial to the patient, boasting a faster recovery time, and the avoidance of general anesthesia.
Carilion says the team performs four or five of these procedures a week.
