ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) As Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has grown over the years, there is one thing that has not changed. One staff member celebrates 60 years of service. Douglas Martin is often the first person people see when they arrive and leave the hospital. "I love people and I love helping people," said Douglas Martin.
Marin is the head of the clinic transporter team, he makes sure patients get in and out of the hospital safely. He has served in various roles over the years from environmental to nursing services. One of his joys is seeing trainees advice in their careers. "I had five young men that worked for me that loved nursing so much they went to medical school. I'm pleased to hear all five are doctors."
Fellow employees say they are inspired by his dedication. " The best way to describe him is class, never before have I met someone who is so joyous about going through his day," said Charles Suba.
Martin says he does not plan to retire soon. "I keep working because the Lord has blessed me with the ability to do it, he has blessed me well and I love people," said Martin.
